'Convince Europe to lift kava ban'

Researchers who discovered that kava is a cure for two types of cancer should convince Europe to lift its ban, says Fiji's Agriculture Minister Ilaitia Tuisese.

Fishing for cigarettes

The Fiji Times reports (19 March 2005) that surveillance cameras have been installed around Fiji's Princess Warf, with Customs officers keeping a close watch on foreign vessels. The measures come after police said they had cracked an attempt to smuggle 20 gross of foreign cigarettes from a Chinese fishing vessel to a shop in the city earlier this week. Fiji police carry out record drugs haul

BBC News reported in June 2004 that police in Fiji raided warehouses outside the capital Suva and seized drugs and chemicals with a street value said to be more than $500m. The Fijian police commissioner, Andrew Hughes, said it was the biggest laboratory producing methamphetamines ever found in the southern hemisphere. Find the full story here.
