1500 Irish pubs close in last seven years
Since 2001, the Irish Republic has seen 1500 pubs close. Drink trade organizations blame government taxation and regulation (the Irish Republic supposedly taxes alcohol more heavily than any other European Union country), a shift toward home drinking, and less drinking whether at home or in a pub (down 7% this year). For details, see here.
