Thousands of drunk drivers in Johannesburg who are facing charges before the courts may walk free because of the high backlog in drunk driving blood samples that are still to be processed in state forensic laboratories.

In most cases, courts throw out cases where forensic test results that might help convict the accused take too long to be released.
